NUTRITIOUS FOOD IN SPOTLIGHT DURING FOOD CHECK-OUT WEEK

During Food Check-Out Week, the American Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee is focusing on ways consumers can stretch their food dollars, but still buy healthy, nutritious food.

Terry Gilbert, a Kentucky farmer and chair of the committee, said she hopes Food Check-Out Week activities will help consumers better understand the dedication and efficiency of all U.S. farmers. “I want consumers to take away, if nothing else, an appreciation for what the farmers and ranchers not only in their local areas provide for but also what farmers and ranchers across the United States provide not only for us here in the United States but for people around the world,” Gilbert said in an AFBF Newsline interview.

In Arizona, to celebrate the milestone this year, the Arizona Farm Bureau WLC will be delivering 90 apple pies to the Arizona Legislators on February 25. The Arizona apples in the pies were grown by Apple Annie’s in Willcox.

Additionally, the Arizona Farm Bureau WLC is challenging each county Farm Bureau to select a needy family in their community and purchase their week’s worth of groceries (not to exceed $150). Or, connect with a local food bank and provide a given amount and then ask if they can spend some time with families at the food bank providing information about agriculture and nutrition.

Several counties are setting up in grocery stores passing out literature and telling the Food Check-out story.

Finally, ABC15 and other media outlets have been telling Arizonans about Food Check-out Week and sharing Arizona Farm Bureau’s advice about stretching our food dollars. Several counties are setting up at grocery stores passing out information and sharing with people about Food Check Out Week.
