Hickman's is pleased to be a part of the Arizona Capitol Mall Beautification Project, in preparation for Arizona's Centennial Celebration. The grass will be greening up with encouragement from The Farms Choice in time for February 14, 2012. Hickman's roll-off containers are in place in anticipation of the recyclable green waste that will soon be generated.

GOVERNOR’S SUMMIT PLANNING CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

Last year, Gov. Jan Brewer welcomed guests to the Governor’s Centennial Summit, where they learned first-hand about plans to commemorate Arizona’s 100th anniversary of statehood. Centennial promotions and public events began in September 2011 and will be held through 2012.

Gov. Brewer, along with representatives of the Arizona Centennial Commission and the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission, provided information on signature state-sanctioned activities and events as well as historic legacy projects. Additionally, many community representatives were on hand to present what local projects are planned in their communities that will complement the state’s Centennial program.

The governor challenged communities to form state centennial committees to begin planning local event and programs.

“We’re really calling on the communities of Arizona to take part in this celebration because only through the dedication and hard work of everyone one involved can we rightfully honor Arizona’s past, present and future as well as our diversity of people, places and progress,” said Brewer.

Community members from across the state attended, including Arizona’s Congressional delegation, Tribal Councils, state Legislators, officials and state agency directors, county boards of supervisors, mayors and councils.

“This was a great opportunity for everyone to understand how vital community participation is to this celebration,” said Karen Churchard, executive director of the Arizona Centennial Commission.

Among the plans announced were the Arizona Centennial Copper Chopper Tour and Centennial Ride project, the Arizona Centennial Museum and the Arizona Capitol Mall Beautification project.

Hickman’s Family Farms is pleased to be part of the literal “grassroots” effort to make everything green and gorgeous in time for the Centennial celebration on February 14, 2012. The Farms Choice – our own organic fertilizer – is hard at work already getting things growing for the biggest birthday party Arizona has had to date.

When to Watch It All Happen

It’s fun to watch an extreme makeover in progress. A lot of changes will be coming to the Capitol Mall at the Wesley Bolin Plaza between now and Valentine’s Day (which is also Arizona’s Centennial celebration). If you work downtown and would like to check on how things are going, here is a “best guess” timeline for the next few weeks. This will start to look really rugged (just as they do in any makeover) before they begin to get gorgeous. So enjoy the process, and we will keep things posted online, too. Here’s what to watch for:

  1. Crews are currently removing what needs to be replaced (plants, gravel etc.), digging out planting beds, and replacing and repairing irrigation drip lines and sprinklers. Juvenile plants will also be planted. (And The Farms Choice will be quietly working its miracles.)

  2. Palm trees will be trimmed this coming weekend (September 17 and 18) and fronds placed in the Hickman roll-off bins.

  3. The summer Bermuda will begin to die off in mid-September, and the scalping of all lawns will begin in early to mid-October.

  4. Overseeding of new grass begins mid to late October.
